Elba High School Students Prepping tunnel house for planting

News Image

On Tuesday, Jan. 27, agriscience students from Elba High School [instructed by Jamie Hudson] helped spread soil inside the newly constructed tunnel house, located behind the Elba Chamber of Commerce office (as shown here). This was done to help prep the house for its first planting. The tunnel house will allow participants to plant various vegetables, flowers, fruits, or herbs almost year round. Wiregrass RC&D agreed to install the tunnel house on the city property at no charge; provide all seed and plants to be used inside the tunnel house for a period of one year; along with Tuskegee University, to plant all crops in the tunnel house as requested for one year and mutually agreed to thereafter; provide training as requested and provide other assistance in planning and implementation as needed, available, and agreed on by the Wiregrass RC&D Council. The tunnel house will benefit Elba City Schools through various educational opportunities, and it will provide Restoration 154’s Giving Garden with additional crops for the Elba food bank.
